How to Check Car Oil – Step by Step

Checking the oil in your car is a relatively simple task that can be done in just a few minutes. Lots of our Ogallala customers have learned how to check the oil level in a car, and do it on a regular basis. Here are the steps to follow:

How to Check the Oil Level in a Car

  1. Park your car on level ground and turn off the engine.
  2. Locate the dipstick, which should be marked with the word “oil” or a picture of an oil can.
  3. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel.
  4. Reinsert the dipstick all the way back in and pull it out again to check the oil level.
  5. The oil level should be between the “minimum” and “maximum” marks on the dipstick.
  6. If the oil level is low, add a small amount of oil (no more than a quart) and check the level again.

How Often Should Your Car’s Oil Be Checked?

Knowing how to check car oil is only part of the picture. How often should you check the oil in your car? Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • It is recommended to check the oil level at least once a month, or before any long trip.
  • You should also check the oil level more frequently if you notice any warning signs such as engine noise, low oil pressure, or warning lights on the dashboard.
  • If you are unsure about how often you should check the oil in your specific car, consult the owner’s manual or speak with a qualified mechanic.
