Do Electric Cars Use Oil?

2022 Chevy Bolt EUV on a beach

Electric cars are pretty similar to traditional gas powered cars, when you set aside the obvious differences in powertrains. That being said, when you bring an EV home to your McCook garage, you should know that you won’t face many of the same maintenance issues and needs. But do electric cars use oil? Is there such a thing as an electric car oil change?

If you’re talking about a purely electric car, one that involves no assistance from a gas or diesel powered engine, then the answer is no, there’s no such thing as an electric car oil change. Having said that, there are other factors to consider when it comes to the maintenance and upkeep of a fully electric car, truck, or SUV. Do Electric Cars Need Oil or Other Lubricants?

While electric vehicles don’t use engine oil, they do still have a transmission and electric motor that require lubrication. While the electric motor parts come lubed for life, things like transmission fluid still need to be replaced at regular intervals. Aside from these fluid changes, automotive experts recommend bringing an EV into a Service Center for inspection and maintenance at least once per year. However, if you’re driving over 14,000 miles per year, much higher than the average Ogallala commuter, then you’re going to need to come in a little more frequently, even twice per year.

Electric Vehicle Service Intervals

So, is there a need for an electric vehicle oil change? Certainly not! But there are other services an EV needs, just like any other Gothenburg faring vehicle! As for when to take care of those services, it’s best to check your owner’s manual, but here’s a guideline you can follow:

  • 7,500 miles: Check fluids and inspect the systems. Rotate tires.
  • 15,000 miles: Replace wiper blades.
  • 36,000 miles: Replace cabin air filter.
  • 75,000 miles: Replace hood gas struts.
  • Every 5 years: Fill vehicle fluids and replace brake fluid.
  • Every 7 years: Change air conditioning desiccant.
